Melanes Kouros of Flerio

Besides Apollonas and Melanes, the locals discovered yet another impressive Kouros in a lying position within a field in the Flerio area, close to the Kouros of Melanes. At a distance of roughly 700 meters lies the also unfinished statue of a Kori. A Kori was the equivalent of a Kouros in the female version.

Archaeological research shows that it dates back to 570 BC. Its height is one of the most impressive features, reaching almost 6 meters, while one leg is broken. The sculpture is assumed to be an order from a wealthy family and was left unfinished, with experts suggesting that it was probably damaged during the creation process and thus was abandoned in the mountainous region. The ancient quarry lies in proximity, so maybe the leg broke during the statue's transfer.

The technique used is characteristic of the Naxian sculpture, and the statue was named Ellinas (Greek) as it was considered to embody the virtues of the race and the ideal physical and personality traits a young male should have.
